Old Light
The image above is not the Earth taken with a fancy science lens, nor is it a hand painted Easter egg. It is the most detailed image ever put together of the Cosmic Microwave Background - radiation that pervades the universe, an afterglow of The Big Bang. It was released to the public yesterday (21st March 2013).The map suggests the universe is slightly older than thought. According to the map, subtle fluctuations in temperature were imprinted on the deep sky when the cosmos was about 370,000 years old. The imprint reflects ripples that arose as early, in the existence of the universe, as the first nonillionth (10-30) of a second.(YES YOU HEARD ME RIGHT, THE FIRST NONILLIONTH OF A SECOND - THAT’S THE LEVEL OF PRECISION WE’RE TALKING ABOUT!) Apparently, these ripples gave rise to the present vast cosmic web of galaxy clusters and dark matter. The European team responsible for this new data estimates the universe to be 13.798 ± 0.037 billion years old, containing 4.9% ordinary matter (you, me and everything you see), 26.8% dark matter and 68.3% dark energy. Also, the Hubble constant was measured to be 67.80 ± 0.77 (km/s)/Mpc.This new data ages the Universe by 80 million years. It also illustrates the progressive nature of science - in light of this new evidence the long accepted age of the universe has been revised, giving us a better and more precise understanding. Out with the old, on with the new - no matter how old and well established.
If only religion adopted this attitude.
